The majority of people with vision impairment are over the age of 50 years. In low- and middle-income regions, the prevalence of distance vision impairment is estimated to be four times higher than in high-income regions. Ageing will increase the risk that more people acquire vision impairment. (“Blindness and Vision Impairment”, 2019)
Matatirtha Oldage Home is one of Bihani Social Venture’s social impact partners, working in the field of ageing. Bihani conducts social engagement activities with the elderly to positively impact their lives. 22 senior citizens from various districts reside at Matatirtha Old Age Home Committee at Matatirtha of Chandragiri Municipality.
On the occasion of World Women’s Day, Bihani Social Venture conducted Vision Disability Prevention and Management Camp for the elders at Matatirtha Old Age Home. A team of 3 optometrists from Tilganga Eye Hospital, Kathmandu contributed their time in the eye camp for effective intervention to address needs of the elder residents. A total of 23 people were examined, out of which 18 were residents at Matatirtha Old age Home whereas, 5 were the caretakers of the Old Age Home and community members of Matatirtha.
The participants consisted of 20 females and 3 males with an average age of 71.3 years. Some of the diagnoses were cataract, ray pseudo, pseudophakia, diabetic macular, IMSCI, presence of macular hole and presbyopia. It was found that 6 elders required surgery and 6 others were in need of eye glasses. The overall objective of examining vision of the residents at Matatirtha Oldage Home in order to prevent vision disability was met.
Bihani is thankful to Australia Awards- Alumni Disability Initiative Grant (ADIG) for supporting the camp to bring a positive impact among the elderly. We express our sincere thanks to the staff and residents of Matatirtha Old Age Home including all our team members and wish to expand our working areas with involvement of the elderly.
